Kava Will Keep You Calm
The herb kava, commonly used in countries in the South Pacific for the last 3,000 years as a natural mood enhancer, has made its way around the world in recent years as a treatment for anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Kava, also called kava kava, is extracted from the root of a shrub that belongs to the pepper family, and contains potent compounds called kavalactones, muscle relaxants that calm both the body and the mind. If you suffer from stress or nervousness, kava can leave you feeling calm but alert. Although it can take several weeks before you notice the effects of kava, it may relieve your anxieties even more than prescription drugs and you will not experience the unpleasantness of dry mouth and nausea or run the risk of addiction. Other benefits are that it can be used to treat fatigue, rheumatism, muscle aches and chronic pain. It acts as a diuretic and can be used to treat urinary tract infections. Drink kava tea before bedtime to help you sleep. It is also available in capsule form. If kava causes drowsiness during the day, or if you experience any other side effects, such as dizziness or headache, the dosage should be reduced or the use discontinued. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid it altogether, except on advice of a physician.
