What is sleeplessness or insomnia? It means lack of sleep which can be a very big problem. The lack of sleep may cause problems like tiredness, a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Insomnia is found in males and females of all age groups, although it seems to be more common in females (especially after menopause) and in the elderly. Sleeplessness is the perception or complaint of inadequate or poor quality sleep because of one or more of the following
* frequently caused by stress
* difficulty falling asleep
* waking up in the middle of the night and having difficulty falling back to sleep
* waking up to early and not being able to fall back to sleep
* poor sleep
There is many different phases associated with the lack of sleep. Short term or transient can last one night or a few weeks, it would seem like it is on and them off. If episodes of short term happen it is said to be intermittent. Constant or chronic lack of sleep is considered to be chronic if it occurs on most nights and lasts a month or more. Chronic lack of sleep is more complex than transient and often results from a combination of factors, including underlying physical or mental disorders. One of the most common causes of chronic insomnia is depression.
What causes sleeplessness? Certain conditions seem to make individuals more likely to experience lack of sleep
* Advanced age ( people over 60 are more effected with the lack of sleep )
* Females
* people with the history of depression
* caffeine
*stress
* anxiety
* or a medical condition
* high temperature
*noise
* smoking
* and a change in your in surrounding environment.
Other underlying causes include arthritis, kidney disease, heart failure, asthma, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and hyperthyroidism. However, chronic may be caused by many behavioral factors, such as the misuse of caffeine, alcohol, or other substances; disrupted sleep/wake cycles as may occur with shift work or other nighttime activity schedules; and chronic stress.
How is it treated?
If transient and intermittent sleep episodes last only a few days at a time may not require treatment. If a persons schedule is interrupted like a temporary change in the sleep/wake schedule could cause a sleeping problem. Usually a person's biological clock will often get back to normal on its own. Daytime sleepiness and impaired performance as a result of transient (short term) sleeplessness, the use of short-acting sleeping pills may improve sleep and next-day alertness. Treatment for chronic consists of diagnosing and treating the persons medical or psychological conditions. Identifying behaviors that may make it worst and try and prevent them from happening so sleep can occur. Sleeping pills: patient taking any sleeping pill should be under the supervision of a physician. Relaxation therapy: specific and effective techniques that can reduce or eliminate anxiety and body tension. As a result, the person's mind is able to stop "racing," the muscles can relax, and restful sleep can occur. Sleep restriction: some people sleep too much so programs are put in place starting with a few hours sleep the first night to increased sleep. Reconditioning: recondition people to associate the bed and bedtime with sleep and sex. The person is usually advised to go to bed only when sleepy and and if they can't get to sleep the person is to get up and return to bed when sleepy.
