Valerian Treats Insomnia, Stress, and Tension Headaches

Valerian is an excellent treatment for insomnia and stress-related conditions, such as tension headaches.  This herb is native to North America, Europe, and parts of Asia, and the root contains its medicinal properties.  If you have trouble sleeping, taking valerian is a non-addictive solution, and its ability to induce a relaxed state also means that it can be effective in reducing your tension and anxiety if those are problems, too.

Other benefits of valerian are that it improves circulation and is good for high blood pressure.  Because it has antispasmodic properties, it can be used to manage irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual cramps, muscle cramps, spasms, and ulcers.  Its ability to ease stress may be a contributing factor in addressing these conditions since tension and anxiety aggravate many of them.

Valerian is available in capsules, tablets, tinctures (an extract made by dissolving it in alcohol), liquids, and tea leaves, and doesnt work for everyone.  Try one dose, and if you feel relaxed, you have a winner.  Use it only at night, since it causes sleepiness.  Usual dosages are 250 to 500 milligrams a day, and you should avoid it altogether if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.  Take valerian for about a two-week stretch and then stop for a week or two before beginning another series.
